Grootste tentoonstelling ooit van architect Rem Koolhaas

4 november 2003, 14:32
From November 15, 2003 till January 18, 2004 the Staatliche Museen of Berlin and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture will conjointly present the largest exhibition ever about the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, his architectural office OMA and its think-tank AMO. The exhibition takes place in the run-up to the opening of the new Netherlands Embassy in Berlin, designed by OMA, and will be supported by the Dutch government.

Rem Koolhaas, Pritzker-Price and Praemium-Imperiale laureate, is one of the most discussed architects and architectural theorists of our times. This show staged in the upper hall of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie is the first major exhibition in a museum since 1994, the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

OMA/Rem Koolhaas have assumed a leading position in the architectural world through their innovative research techniques, thinking and design. Their unique standing derives from the fact that they constantly explore and employ new disciplines in an effort to maximize the potential of every project, from detached family houses (House in Bordeaux) to high-rise buildings (CCTV, Beijing).

This exhibition will be an overview of OMA-AMO’s architecture and design projects as well as a choice of the most outstanding innovations especially since the late 90s. Previously unreleased projects are made available to the public by an extraordinary and exceptional exhibition concept.

CONTENT is supported by artists and designers who co-operated with OMA-AMO, for instance Tony Oursler with his multimedia installation of “Junkspace”, a text written by Koolhaas, and Jeff Preiss with a new film to be shown in an experimental manner. Candida Höfer is going to present her brand-new photographs of the Dutch Embassy in Berlin for the first time. Numerous architecture models will be on display in topic-related sections (e.g. high-risers, museum projects, one-family houses). Furthermore, there will be film-installations, a film-archive and a reading room are available and the visitors will be offered an insight into the theories of Rem Koolhaas and OMA’s and AMO’s many project publications.

Curators: Kayoko Ota, OMA; Dr. Andres Lepik and Dr. Cristina Steingräber, State Museums of Berlin. Exhibition design: Jens Hommert, OMA.

After Berlin the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) will take over the exhibition to Rotterdam where it will be presented at the Kunsthal from March 2004. In addition to CONTENT the NAI will present an exhibition in its own building on the early works of Koolhaas and OMA from 14 February through 23 May 2004. The exhibition CONTENT will start an international tour after being presented in Rotterdam.

The exhibition in Berlin is held by the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in co-operation with the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) and the Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie with the support of the Netherlands Culture Fund, the Netherlands Architecture Fund, the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, the Samsung Foundation of Culture and the Prince Bernhard Cultuurfonds.

At the occasion of the exhibition the book “Content” (approx. 600 pages) will be published at Taschen-Verlag. Editor: Brendan McGetrick (OMA/AMO); Design: “&&&”.

The entrance fee is 6 € / 3 €. Opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 6pm, Thursday from 10am to 10pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 6pm.
