St Joseph Maternity Clinic, Paris

The “Metamorphosis” project – or, in other words, the transformation of a 53?000?m² eighteenth century pavilion-style hospital into a city hospital for the future. The new St Joseph Maternity Clinic in the Parisian 14th arrondissement, winner of the Archidesignclub award in the “Health” category, features pristine white adjustable ALUCOBOND®-shutters.

Renovation and extension work was based on historical building plans in order to protect the pavilion hospital’s decentral-ised structure: its colonnades, gardens and chapel. Symbolic and reconciliatory architecture, enabled AIA Architects Ingenieurs Associés to mediate sensitively between conflicting elements: remembrance of a his-toric place and dynamic renewal. The design is mindful of the historical presence and the additional new structures are designed correspondingly. They fit in with the existing architecture perfectly, preserve the legibility of the original lay-out, structuring and open-ing it out at the same time. The newly built rectangular maternity clinic is located on the courtyard at the heart of the complex. Positioning the new building at the centre of the historic axis articulates how important it is for a society to renew itself from within. The new organisation not only improves the medical-technology infrastructure but also promotes the bundling of resources.

The new clinic, with its smooth white façade looks immaculate – pure like a new-born baby. Movable ALUCOBOND®-shutters ensure that the whole façade is an interesting graphic animation. The maternity clinic becomes the symbol of a hospital at the heart of society thanks to this exterior. ALUCOBOND^®’s flatness and design flexibility proved to be the ideal answer to the complex requirements.
