The IABR–Project Atelier Rotterdam 2016 is a design research on the making economy of Metropolitan region Rotterdam The Hague (MRDH). It investigated what the most promising components are and how the making economy can add value locally. The Project Atelier, including De Zwarte Hond (atelier master Daan Zandbelt), the French office L’AUC and marco.broekman, shows its most important research results on the IABR 2016 exhibition The Next Economy.

focusses on two themes within the research: repositioning working districts and circular landscapes.

The industrial areas of the region MRDH are often considered mono-functional, while activities on those sites are actually quite diverse and a significant part of production and innovation is taking place here. By tuning and diversifying these industrial districts a region arises where companies could complement each other rather than compete. The research results to a new economical central axe of the MRDH, the BetaPark. By providing urban functions and by improving existing connections between the Campus in Delft, Spaansepolder in Rotterdam and the agricultural landscape in between, the center BetaPark arises the vibrant economy in place where people live, learn, and innovate.

In addition, in a circular economy, landscapes are valuable sources of materials, products and energy. This research has resulted in a vision for the Botlek harbour, where the agricultural landscape blends with the possible landscape qualities of the harbor. In the public and accessible Botlek Bio-Based Park, material and energy flows from both harbor and agricultural landscapes.
